SMC Cornhole Tournament Seats, Feet and Blanket Drive Supports
HomeAid would like to thank BIA’s Sales and Marketing Council (SMC) for supporting HomeAid’s newest Care Provider, Hijas del Campo with a Seats, Feet, and Blanket Drive at their Cornhole Tournament event last week! SMC and generous event participants collected: 211 pairs of new socks, 175 pairs of new underwear, and 34 new blankets! These necessities will comfort local farmworkers and their families who harvest the food that nourish our bodies.
Hijas del Campo, which translates to Daughters of the Field, was founded in the Fall of 2020 by four East Contra Costa County mom’s who recognized the marginalization and lack of services available specifically to migrant farmworkers and their families during the COVID 19 pandemic and wildfire season. These four women, all of whom are daughters of Mexican immigrant farmworkers, immediately began distributing personal protective equipment, food, water, and other necessities directly to local farmworkers.
Farming in Contra Costa started in the 1800’s with dry-land wheat farming, commonly shipping grain to England. With the first irrigation system in 1910 farming shifted to planting fruit orchards and alfalfa to support the local dairy industry. Farmers used packing sheds along the railroad tracks to load fruits, which were then shipped nationwide in rail cars with ice bunkers to preserve them. Today these family farms continue to operate, building on over 150 years of farming history in the region.
