Big Beautiful Bill Hurts Veterans – How You Can Help!

The Administration's omnibus budget bill plans to take away health coverage and food assistance from many millions of people, including veterans. Currently, one out of every four veterans receives food assistance from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or supplemental health coverage from Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).  Veterans could be particularly harmed by proposed Medicaid and SNAP cuts, given the complexity of their health care needs and their higher experience of food insecurity compared to non-veterans. Additionally, an estimated 680,000 children of working veterans would be left out of the bill’s expanded $2,500 Child Tax Credit.

These proposed cuts to safety net programs are in addition to recent DOGE cuts that fired over 1,000 veterans from the federal workforce, gutted Veteran Administration (VA) healthcare, destaffed the veterans’ suicide hotline, and eliminated mortgage protections to veterans at risk of losing their homes.

Please check out Home of the Brave.  To see the proposed cuts to veteran services, visit The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities or review the Big Beautiful Bill language.  To help amend the proposed bill language and support funding veteran programs, please reach out to the US Senate and House Representatives supporting the cuts.  Not sure who represents you – you can find your local representatives by clicking here, and ask them to return veteran service funding.
